The Eighth Internet Governance Forum (IGF 2013) was held from 22 to 25 October 2013 at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Bali, Indonesia. Convened by the United Nations, the annual forum brought together governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, and the technical community to discuss public policy issues affecting the Internet under the multistakeholder model. The 2013 meeting was organized under the overarching theme “Building Bridges: Enhancing Multistakeholder Cooperation for Growth and Sustainable Development.”
Anupam Agrawal participated in IGF 2013 as an ISOC Ambassador, representing the Internet Society (ISOC) as part of its global Ambassador Programme. The programme enables emerging Internet leaders to engage with international policy discussions, build cross-sector collaboration, and contribute to the development of an open, secure, and globally accessible Internet.
IGF 2013 featured an extensive programme comprising high-level ministerial sessions, main sessions, dynamic coalition meetings, open forums, best practice exchanges, and more than 150 workshops. Discussions focused on some of the most pressing issues influencing the future of the Internet, including Internet governance principles, cybersecurity, privacy and data protection, human rights online, critical Internet resources, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), access and connectivity, capacity building, multilingualism, child online safety, cloud computing, Internet innovation, and sustainable development. A significant emphasis was placed on strengthening cooperation among stakeholders to address the technical, social, economic, and policy challenges associated with the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.
The forum also highlighted the growing importance of National and Regional Internet Governance Forums (NRIs), encouraging broader participation from developing economies and fostering inclusive dialogue at local, regional, and global levels. Through interactive discussions and collaborative policy development, participants explored practical approaches to expanding Internet access, enhancing trust and security, and promoting digital inclusion while preserving the Internet’s openness and interoperability.
As an ISOC Ambassador, Anupam Agrawal engaged with policymakers, technical experts, industry leaders, and civil society representatives from around the world, gaining valuable insights into international Internet governance processes and best practices. His participation contributed to strengthening India’s engagement in global Internet policy discussions and reinforced the importance of multistakeholder collaboration in shaping the future of the Internet.
Participation in IGF 2013 marked an important milestone in Anupam Agrawal’s journey within the global Internet governance community, providing opportunities to build international partnerships, exchange knowledge, and contribute to discussions that continue to influence the evolution of the Internet as a secure, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable global resource.
